Miller was a three-time MAC Champion in the discus with men's track and field, capturing titles in 1969, 1970 and 1971, each year he was eligible to compete at a varsity level as freshmen were not eligible to compete at the time.

During his career, he was one of just five athletes in Mid-American Conference history to win a MAC Championship in the discus three times in a career. His throw of 185-5 in 1971 was a Miami record for more than two decades before being eclipsed by two inches in 1994. Miller's throw continues to rank highly at Miami in the discus and was nearly three feet better than the No. 3 distance. He set a MAC Championship record in 1971 with a throw of 178-7, which remained the championship standard until 1983.

A three-time letterwinner, Miller served as team tri-captain his senior season. He qualified for the Olympic Trials in the discus in 1972.
