Strome earned two letters in basketball as a guard and forward under Coach Dick Shrider and later returned to serve as an assistant basketball coach under Tates Locke from 1966-69. From 1969-79 Strome served as Miami's tennis coach and he guided Miami to seven MAC championships and an overall record of 167-64 and a winning percentage of .723. At one time he guided Miami to a 46-match winning streak against MAC foes.
During his tenure Miami had 27 singles and 14 doubles champions in the MAC. Five times he was voted the MAC coach of the year. He is the holder of two degrees from Miami, his B.S. in 1964 and M.Ed. in 1966, and a Ph.D. from Ohio State in 1972. In 1979 Strome became the head tennis coach at Louisiana State University. He was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1980.
