Van Scoyoc ran for Miami from 1985-89 and was a two-time All-American, earning the honors in cross country in 1986 after a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Championships and in 1989 in track after a seventh-place finish in the 10,000 meters at the national meet. As a freshman, he was Miami's top finisher to lead the Red and White to the 1985 MAC Cross Country title and a team berth in the NCAA Championships. Van Scoyoc was tabbed the Ohio Cross Country Runner of the Year in 1987 and was an NCAA qualifier three times.

In track, Van Scoyoc won the 5,000 meter run at the 1988 MAC Championships as a junior and was the runner up in the 10,000 meters in 1987 and in the 5,000 meters and 3,000 meter steeplechase in 1989. He twice qualified for the NCAA Championships in track. Over his career, Van Scoyoc was a four-time All-MAC selection in both cross country and track and lettered four times in each sport.
