From 1988-91, Munnell amassed 100 wins as a wrestler for the Red and White. One of six wrestlers in Miami history to win three consecutive MAC individual championships, Munnell captured titles at the 190-pound weight class in 1989, 1990 and 1991 to earn trips to the NCAA Championships each year. As a junior, Munnell placed seventh at the NCAA Championships to seize All-America honors. He spearheaded Miami to a MAC Championship in his final season in 1991, the first team title for the Red and White since 1984.
A four-year letterwinner and two-time captain (1990, 1991), Munnell was selected the Outstanding Wrestler at the 1991 MAC Championships. He then served as an assistant coach in 1992 as Miami captured its second straight MAC team title. As a freshman, he placed second in the 190-pound weight class at the MAC Championships and was also named to the Amateur Wrestling Freshman All-Star Team.
