Ted Downing, a native of Evanston, Ill., became the first collegiate high jumper in Ohio to clear seven feet and he did that 15 times beginning with the NCAA Indoor Championship that he won in 1967 through the Olympic Trials at Lake Tahoe in 1968. In both 1967 and 1968, Downing captured the high jump title at the MAC Championships and Penn Relays.
He also won the International Meet of Champions in Winnipeg, Canada in 1967. he twice earned All-America honors by winning the NCAA Indoor title in 1967 with a jump of 7-1/4 and placed third in 1968. Downing was selected as Miami's Athlete of the Year for 1967-68.
