Hall of Fame
A 1934 graduate of Ohio State where he earned All-America honors as an end, Gillman was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Gillman began his coaching career at Miami and guided Miami to a record of 31-6-1. In his last game, Miami defeated Texas Tech, 13-12, in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
After serving one year as an assistant under Earl "Red" Blaik at Army in 1948, he coached the Cincinnati Bearcats to a record of 50-13-1 from 1949-54. He coached 18 years in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams (1955-60), San Diego Chargers (1961-71), and Houston Oilers (1973-74). Gillman's professional record was 122-99-7. His teams captured five divisional titles and one AFL championship. He also worked in the front office with the Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears.
