Cheadle lettered three years in track and scored a total of 128? points in the shot put and discus. He broke the Buckeye Conference record in the discus in 1932 with a toss of 132-87/8. He earned three letters as a guard in basketball and was a reserve center in football for one year. He was honored as the "M-Man of the Year" in 1976. A 1932 graduate of Miami,

Cheadle is a noted botanist with the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard and honorary LL.D. degrees from Rhode Island and Miami. He served as Chancellor of the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1962 until his retirement in June of 1977. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.
