Crain was a three-year starter and letterwinner for the Miami baseball team. The speedy infielder held the single-season record for stolen bases and runs scored upon his graduation in 1970. Since graduation, Don has dedicated himself to growing and improving both the Athletic Department, as well as Miami University as a whole.

Crain, the 2018 John E. Dolibois Award winner for his service to the university, was a member of the Miami Board of Trustees from 2006-15, with two years as vice chair and two years as chair. He also served as member and president of the Red & White Club Board and as a member of the Miami Middletown Citizens Advisory Council for 22 years. He has taught classes in the Farmer School of Business and founded and is active with the Miami Baseball Alumni Association and Board. Twice, Crain earned the Don Loss Volunteer of the Year Award.

He and his wife, Susan '73, were active supporters of the Graduating Champions campaign, which Don initiated while on the Board of Trustees. This fundraising campaign raised more than $82 million to advance Miami Athletics. The Crains endowed the Donald and Susan Crain Baseball Scholarship as their contribution to the campaign..
