Bill Mulliken became Miami's first NCAA and Olympic swimming champion and established at least 15 records before graduating in 1961. The highlight of his career came in 1960 when he won the Gold Medal in the Olympic Games in Rome, Italy. He swam the 200-meter breaststroke in the record time of 2:37.2.
In 1959 he captured the 200-meter breaststroke in the Pan American Games and the AAU indoor 200-yard breaststroke in 1960. He also established an American and NCAA record with a time of 2:21.3 in the 200-yard breaststroke in the NCAA Swimming Championships in 1959. In three years of Mid-American Conference Championship competition, he won nine individual titles and set four records.
He won two titles each in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and 440-yard freestyle events. His other three championships came in the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard individual medley and 1,500-meter freestyle events. Mulliken's swimming prowess earned him All-America recognition four times.
He went on to Harvard where he earned a law degree. He was inducted into Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1971.
