Paul Shoults was captain and voted the "Most Valuable Player" his senior year in football prior to graduation from Miami in 1949. He was twice selected all-Ohio and all-Mid-American Conference as a halfback. In four years from 1943, 1946-48, he helped Miami compile a record of 30-6-3 and capture its first MAC title in 1948. In addition to earning four letters in football, he also lettered three years as an outfielder in baseball.

Following graduation, Shoults played one year of professional football with the New York Bulldogs (formerly the Boston Yanks) in the Eastern Division of the NFL. He served as head football coach at Fairview High School in Dayton for two years. Shoults returned to Miami in 1952 as freshman football coach under former teammate Ara Parseghian. He worked with Parseghian for 22 years at Miami, Northwestern, and Notre Dame as defensive secondary coach. He joined Parseghian and former Notre Dame assistant Tom Pagna in Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1977 Shoults was named associate athletic director at Eastern Michigan University. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975.
