Van der Berg started his Miami career with a bang being named a Golf Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American as a freshman in 1994 and also being tabbed the Division I Freshman Golfer of the Year. He was the individual medalist at the MAC Championships as a freshman, earning MAC Freshman of the Year honors in 1994 and also becoming the first freshman to be tabbed a Miami Athlete of the Year. Van den Berg is one of only three players in program history to capture all-MAC honors all four seasons.
In 1996, van den Berg again was the individual medalist at the MAC Championships, spearheading Miami to its last league title and becoming one of just four Miami golfers to twice win the MAC Championship. He was named MAC Golfer of the Year in 1996 and then again in 1997 and also was tabbed MAC Sportsman of the Year in 1997. He also was a two-time academic all-MAC selection. Van den Berg led Miami to NCAA Championships appearances in 1994 and 1996 and a Central Regional berth in 1997.
He is Miami's career record holder for tournament wins with seven and ranks fourth in career scoring average (74.17).
