Shaw distinguished himself as a championship swimmer from 1966-69. He captured eight individual titles in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle events and was a member of four championship relay teams in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle events. He qualified for the NCAA Championships in 1967 and 1968 and participated in the Olympic Trials in 1968 in Long Beach, Calif. Shaw was the recipients of the William Mulliken Award as the outstanding freshman swimmer in 1966 and voted the "Outstanding MAC Senior Swimmer" in 1969.
A member of two MAC championship teams in 1967 and 1968, Shaw was selected team captain his senior year. His coach was Raymond Ray, who was inducted into Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. He returned to his alma mater in 1974 and coached the Redskins to a 10-year record of 77 wins and 36 defeats. Shaw was voted the "Coach of the Year" as Miami captured the MAC championship in his first year. His teams also finished second seven times. He is now a computer software consultant.
