Russell earned All-America honors three consecutive years by finishing fifth in the 100-yard butterfly event at the NCAA Swimming Championships from 1966-68. He is the holder of nine MAC titles in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events and the 200-yard individual medley. He was also a member of two championship relay teams in the 400-yards medley and the 800-yard freestyle events.
His senior year, Russell qualified for the Olympic Trials in Long Beach, California. He helped lead Miami to MSC championships in 1967 and 1968 and was coached by Raymond Ray, also a member of Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame.
