Charles Heimsch

Charles Heimsch was a two-sport standout for Miami during his playing days. He earned two letters in football in 1934 and 1935, while playing for coach Frank Wilton, as well as being a three-year letterwinner in gold (1934-36). Heimsch played both ways in football; he was a quarterback on offense and a linebacker/defensive back on defense.
Heimsch, a native of Dayton, has both his master's (1939) and doctorate degrees (1941) from Harvard, has contributed greatly to his alma mater after graduation, as well. He returned to Miami in 1959 as a professor in the Department of Botany. He later became chairman of the department, and was also a Professor Emeritus of Botany.
Heimsch won the prestigious Benjamin Harrison Medal in 1981. In addition to serving on MU's Athletic Advisory Board for several years, he also served as Miami's NCAA and Mid-American Conference faculty representative from 1974-84.
