Miami quarterback Nobby Wirkowski lettered from 1948-50. He took over the starting role in 1950 and led the Red and White to a 9-1 record and a Mid-American Conference Championship. Miami also posted a 54-21 win over Arizona State in the Salad Bowl. In that same year, Wirkowski completed 69 of 135 passes for 1,235 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He later went on to play 10 years in the Canadian Football League where he led the 1952 Toronto Argonauts to the Grey Cup. He also served as Toronto's head coach from 1962-64 and went on to serve as an administrator (the Canadian equivalent of Athletic Director) of York University from 1967-92.
