Hall of Fame
Jones, a 1955 Miami graduate, captured the NCAA shot put championship in 1954 and finished runner-up in 1955. He won the Mid-American Conference shot put title in 1953, 1954 and 1955 and the discus championship in 1954 and 1955. He also won the all-Ohio titles in the shot put three times and discus, twice. His toss of 59 feet, one inch in the shot put was the second best in NCAA history at the time. In the discus his best distance was 157-6.
A member of Miami's MAC championship football team in 1954, he was selected All-MAC defensive tackle in 1952, 1953 and 1954. During his two-sport career, he was coached by two charter members of Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame in George Rider and Ara Parseghian.
