Hall of Fame
Selected as a Mitchell & Ness All-American in 1984, Kathy (Kiernan) Pownall remains the only Miami field hockey player to garner All-America honors. Kiernan, a tenacious forward for the Red and White from 1981-84, spearheaded Miami to a first-place Mid-American Conference tie in 1981 and a first-place finish in 1982 as Miami compiled a combined 14-2 MAC record during its first two seasons of MAC play.
Over Miami's first four years of MAC competition, Kiernan helped the Red and White to an impressive 23-6 (.793) record, while posting a combined overall record of 52-22-3 during her career. As a junior in 1983, she was named First-Team All-MAC. The following year Kiernan earned Mitchell & Ness All-Region honors en route to being named an All-American.
In 1983, she established a Miami standard for points in a season (57), which stands to this day, and has two single-season point totals among the top three in Miami history. Kiernan also ranks second and sixth in goals in a season. She remains ranked second, behind Miami Hall of Famer Elli Workum, for career goals (65) and points (142), totals that were not even challenged until the late 1990s.
