Fertig lettered three years each in football and baseball from 1931-34. He was selected first team all-Buckeye Conference and all-Ohio as a fullback his senior year. Playing for Coach Frank Wilton he helped lead Miami to two Buckeye Conference football championships in 1932 and 1933. He was a catcher and outfielder in baseball and signed a professional contract with the Philadelphia Athletics following graduation.
He received All-America recognition in 1932 as he helped lead Miami to a 7-1 record by accounting for at least two touchdowns in three of the games. In his senior year Fertig accounted for three touchdowns against Wittenberg on a 72-yard run, plunge up the middle and threw a 20-yard scoring pass. Also a standout on defense, he accounted for half the tackles in his final game against Cincinnati. He was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1980.
