Shoemaker earned four letters as a guard and played on two MAC championship teams in basketball under coach Darrell Hedric. He was selected second-team all-MAC in basketball both his junior and senior years as he scored a career total of 934 points and had 325 assists. He also earned three letters in baseball as a first baseman, third baseman and center fielder for coach Bud Middaugh.
In his sophomore year, he batted .300 and his junior year he helped establish a Miami record with 45 victories. Two of his teammates were Bill Doran, who played as the second baseman with the Cincinnati Reds, and Charlie Leibrandt, a who pitched with the Atlanta Braves.
He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. After his playing career concluded, he became a manager in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system. His managing career has lasted for over 35 seasons.
