A defenseman on the Miami hockey team from 1980-83, Beaton ranks seventh on the Miami hockey career scoring list with 150 points and is tied for third on the all-time assists list with 103. A two-year captain and team MVP for head coach Steve Cady, Beaton led Miami to a 73-66-6 mark during his career.
He was a second-team all-Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) selection as a senior, when he helped lead Miami to an 18-17-1 mark and its first-ever berth in the CCHA playoffs. Beaton was the Miami Rookie of the Year in 1980 and received the Coaches/Blue Line Club Award in 1981.
