Hopkins was a three-sport athlete at Miami. Hopkins earned a combined eight letters, including three in football and baseball and two in basketball. Hopkins was the quarterback for Miami, helping the Red and White to an 8-0 mark in 1921 and an Ohio Conference championship. He served as captain of the baseball team in 1924, spurring Miami to an 8-3 record while boasting a batting average above .300.

Hopkins also served as team captain for the Miami basketball team during the 1923-24 season.
