Bud Middaugh guided 12 Miami baseball teams to a record of 359-173 for a winning percentage of .673. His baseball teams captured three MAC championships and appeared in the NCAA Playoffs four times. Middaugh's 1977 team set an all-time Miami record for most wins in a season of any sport with 45. Four players gained All-America recognition, nine were selected all-district, 17 made first team all-MAC and 20 signed professional baseball contracts under the guidance of Middaugh.

A four-year letterman at shortstop under Woody Wills, Middaugh was selected all-MAC his senior year. After graduation he coached three years at Lorain Admiral King High School and compiled a record of 52-14. Two Lorain sectional titles, one Cleveland district championship and a Buckeye Conference crown were won by Admiral King during his tenure. Middaugh returned to Miami in 1967 as an assistant baseball coach and the following year accepted the head coaching assignment. He quickly moved Miami to baseball prominence in not only the MAC, but also on a national level.

Miami captured their first-ever MAC baseball titles in 1973 and 1974. In his 12 seasons at Miami he never had a losing season. In 1980 Middaugh accepted a new challenge as head baseball coach at the University of Michigan. He responded by leading the Wolverines to seven Big 10 and District 4 titles and participated in four College World Series in Omaha, and in 1983 finished third. Middaugh worked with players like Barry Larkin, Chris Sabo, Hal Morris, Scott Kamienicki and Jim Abbott. He was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1981.
