Sargent is Miami men's track and field's only indoor All-American in a running event with his fourth-place finish in the 600 at the 1979 NCAA Championships.
A three-time MAC Champion for Miami, Sargent captured conference crowns in the 800 meters in 1980, the mile relay in 1980 and the 400 meters in 1982. An active record which he has held for more than 35 years, Sargent set the standard in the 800 meters with the time of 1:47.00 he established in 1980, which is nearly three seconds faster than the next-best time. Sargent also owns Miami indoor and outdoor records in the 440 yard run and indoor mile relay. During his time at Miami, he helped spearhead Miami to two MAC Championships in 1979 and 1981.
Sargent was an Olympic Trial qualifier in the 800 meters in 1980, advancing to the semifinals of the trials. Sargent went on to spend time running professionally in Melbourne, Australia.
