Leibrandt earned four letters as a pitcher on Miami baseball teams from 1975-78 under coach Bud Middaugh, who is a member of Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame. He was selected first team all-MAC and all-District 4 his senior year when he compiled a record of 7-2 and an ERA of 1.65. Among Miami's all-time leaders, he ranks second in strikeouts (252); fourth in innings pitched (286); tied for sixth in games (63) with Gary Wright (also a member of Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame), and eighth in victories (23).

Following graduation in 1978, Leibrandt was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and posted a four-year record of 16-17. In 1983, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals and is currently the second-winningest left-handed pitcher in the American League with a five-year record of 74-55 and an ERA of 3.70. In 1985, Leibrandt posted a record of 17-9 and had the second-lowest ERA in the American League of 2.69. He finished fifth in the balloting for the Cy Young Award. He also helped the Royals win the World Series in 1985 and the Atlanta Braves win the National League in 1991 and 1992.
