Mel Knowlton earned three letters each in baseball and basketball and was named all-Buckeye Conference in both sports at Miami. He participated in football for two years as a player and served as a student assistant with the freshman football team for two years. He was also a member of the Athletic Board of Control. After graduation he returned to Massillon where he coached under his high school mentor Paul Brown.
From 1946-69 Knowlton served as head football coach at Alliance High School where his teams compiled a 24-year record of 150-85-8. His team captured the state championship in 1958. He was named Ohio Coach of the Year in 1954 and twice Stark County Coach of the Year. Knowlton served as president of the Ohio High School Football Coaches' Association in 195 and was named to that group's Hall of Fame in 1972. After retiring from coaching he remained as athletic director at Alliance until 1978. He was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1981.
