Wayne Gibson was a 170-pound fullback under Sid Gillman in 1946 and 1947. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry his senior year as Miami compiled a 9-0-1 record and captured the Sun Bowl Championship over Texas Tech, 13-12, in El Paso. Although "Gibby" has fond memories of recent visits to Texas, he will never forget having to be carried off the field in the Sun Bowl suffering from a broken leg.

After serving as an assistant football coach at Buffalo and head football coach at Gallia Academy in Gallipolis and Sidney high schools, Gibson returned to Miami in 1956 to serve seven years as an assistant football coach under John Pont and one under Bo Schembechler. He became assistant athletic director in 1964 and associate athletic director in 1977 under Richard Shrider. He was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1981.
