Mallory lettered three years as an offensive end from 1954-56 and gained all-MAC recognition his last two years. He helped Miami gain two MAC titles under Coach Ara Parseghian and played his senior year for Coach John Pont. After serving as an assistant football coach at Bowling Green, Yale and Ohio State, Mallory became head coach at Miami and in five years from 1969-73 led Miami to a record of 39-12. His last year he guided Miami to only its seventh perfect season with an 11-0 record and was rewarded by gaining coaching honors in the MAC, Ohio and NCAA District 5.
Mallory left Miami for Colorado where he led the Buffalos from 1974-78 to a record of 35-20-1 and to post-season appearances in the Orange Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl. He then went on to coach at Northern Illinois. He 1984 he accepted a coaching position at Indiana. He owns a 162-113-4 career coaching mark, including a 63-61-3 mark in 11 seasons with the Hoosiers. He led Indiana to six postseason bowl games and has twice earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. He was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1980.
