Galat, a standout football player and wrestler at Thomas Harvey High School in Painesville, O., continued his athletic career at Miami by earning three letters each in football and wrestling from 1959-61. He was selected as Miami's Outstanding Senior Athlete. However, Galat is best known around Miami for his six seasons coaching the Miami wrestling teams to a record of 53-18-1 and four MAC championships in 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968. He coached a total of 18 individual MAC champions. He was selected MAC Coach of the Year twice and finished second in balloting for national Rookie Coach of the Year honors during the 1963-64 season.
In addition to his wrestling duties, Galat also served as an assistant football coach under Bo Schembechler for four years. After leaving Miami, he served as an assistant football coach at Yale, Kentucky, Memphis Southmen, Youngstown, New York Giants, Montreal Allouettes and the Houston Oilers. His head coaches with Miami ties have included Carmen Cozza, John McVay, Bill Narduzzi and Eddie Biles.
