Paul Dietzel arrived on the Miami campus in 1946 and was made captain of the football team. Playing both offensively and defensively at center, he helped Miami compile a two-year record of 16 wins, three defeats and one tie. Included in the record was a victory over Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl in 1947. He was selected to three All-America teams and voted first team all-MAC and all-Ohio in 1947.

A member of Miami's all-time "Gridiron Greats," Dietzel served as president of Omicron Delta Kappa before graduating in 1948. For 16 years he had served as head football coach at LSU (1955-61), Army (1962-65) and South Carolina (1966- 74). He had also served as Athletic Director at South Carolina for five years. In 1958 he guided LSU to the national championship and was selected Coach of the Year. While at LSU his teams won two Southeastern Conference titles and appeared in the Sugar Bowl twice and the Orange Bowl once.

He has won one Atlantic Coast Conference title at South Carolina and participated in the Peach Bowl. He has also coached in the Blue-Gray Classic, Hula Bowl, North-South and East-West Shrine games.

Dietzel is a past president of the American Football Coaches Association and was inducted into Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1971.
