Mel Olix earned four letters as a quarterback for Miami from 1946-49. He helped the Redskins compile a record of 28 wins, eight defeats and two ties. As a sophomore he led Miami to an undefeated season and a win over Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl. He completed 71 of 133 passes for 1, 081 yards and eight touchdowns. In 1948 he helped lead Miami to its first Mid-American Conference football championship.
He threw a dozen touchdown passes his junior year stetting the record in 1948 until 1977, and is currently ranked seventh in season stats. His career totals included 197 pass completions, ranking 10, in 409 attempts, ranking eight, for 3,035 yards, ranking sixth, and 29 touchdowns, tied ranking fourth.
He was selected all-Ohio and all-MAC for three consecutive years. He also made honorable mention All-America. At the end of his senior year he participated in the Blue-Gray Classic. Selected as one of Miami's all time Gridiron Greats, Olix was teammates with Ara Paraseghian, John Pont and Paul Dietzel all members of the Hall of Fame.
He went on to University of Cincinnati Medical School for his M.D. and Ohio State Grad School for his M.M.Sc., eventually to become an orthopedic surgeon.
