Helping to pave the way for one of Miami's most prolific rushers, Gunlock was a three-year letterwinner as an offensive guard for the Red and White. During his playing career, Miami seized Mid-American Conference titles in 1948 and 1950, posting 4-0 league records each season. The team compiled an 11-1 MAC mark over his three seasons and a combined overall record of 21-5-1, which included a 7-1-1 record in 1948 and a 9-1 mark in 1950. Miami earned the second bowl berth in program history when the team was selected for the 1950 Salad Bowl (now known as the Fiesta Bowl). Miami went on to defeat Arizona State 34-21 in the Salad Bowl that season. Throughout his playing career, Gunlock's efforts on the front line helped John Pont become Miami's top ground-gainer at the time, amassing 2,457 rushing yards.

Following graduation, Gunlock spent two years in the Army where he played football for the Brook Army Medical Center, which was rated second in the country. He then went into a career in coaching, serving on the Heidelberg, Bowling Green, West Point and Ohio State staffs before changing career paths and starting a successful business career. He helped all four programs achieve undefeated seasons and conference titles. He was a part of the 1958 West Point program that was ranked third nationally and the national championship team at Ohio State in 1961. Additionally, he has served on Miami University's Board of Trustees and Foundation Board, Red and White Club Advisory Board, and Leadership Gift Committee.
