Softball
Last Week: Miami (17-11 overall, 3-0 MAC) upped its winning streak to seven straight games with a Mid-American Conference opening sweep of Ball State last weekend. The RedHawks used a three-run bottom of the fifth inning to come from behind and earn a 4-3 victory over Ball State on Friday. (Recap) Miami won both games of the doubleheader against the Cardinals on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep. (Recap) This Week: Miami hosts Wright State in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 p.m. It is the Cancer Awareness game. The RedHawks resume MAC play this weekend when they travel to Toledo for a three-game series. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: Miami was unable to overcome an early stretch of defeats in a 5-2 loss to No. 45 South Alabama Wednesday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. Junior Andreea Badileanu and freshman Emily Struble picked up singles wins for the RedHawks. (Recap) After earning an opening doubles victory, Miami was unable to pick up its first victory in its last four outings, falling 4-3 to No. 61 Old Dominion in its non-conference finale Friday afternoon at the University of South Alabama's Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. Badileanu and sophomore Nelli Ponomareva notched singles wins for the Red and White. (Recap) This Week: Miami turns its attention toward the Mid-American Conference regular season and a chance for an eighth-consecutive regular-season title. The RedHawks travel to Ball State on Friday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
Golf
Last Week: Miami competed in both the Lone Star Invitational and the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational this past week. At the Lone Star Invitational, the RedHawks placed 15th overall. (Monday Recap) (Tuesday Recap) Miami improved to 12th overall at the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational. Sophomore Patrick Flavin continued his fantastic year, by finishing as co-medalist at this tournament with a three-round score of eight-under par. (Friday Recap) (Saturday Recap) (Sunday Recap) This Week: The RedHawks are idle and will return to action April 9-10 at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Indiana.
Track and Field
Last Week:The Red and White kicked off outdoor action at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold invitational in Nashville. The RedHawks picked up wins and four events and a number of top-five finishes. Arionna Darling marked 50-4 to win the women's shot put and take the lead in the Mid-American Conference standings. Jess Baker cleared 5-5.25 to tie for the win in the women's high jump. Matt Owens cleared 16-0.75 to win the pole vault. Vinnie Minosky won the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 52.50 for the top of the conference standings. In the women's javelin standings the RedHawks have the top two spots with Danielle Collier edging out fellow RedHawk Aaryn Gray. Kathie Wollney leads the conference in the 400m hurdles and Jake Owens leads in the men's 200m. Six 'Hawks punched their tickets to the MAC Championships after meeting the qualifying standards last weekend they are Alexus Jimson-Miller (100m hurdles), Vinnie Minosky (400m hurdles), Peter Stefanski (high jump), Arionna Darling (Shot Put), Danielle Collier (javelin) and Aaryn Gray (javelin) (Friday Recap) (Saturday Recap). This Week: The Red and White will split the squad and send one group to the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday and host the Miami Duals at the Rider Track Complex on Saturday.
Baseball
Last week: Thought it was tight, Miami never trailed on the way to a 5-4 win over Northwestern in the team's home opener on Wednesday. Five RedHawks collected multi-hit performances. Michael Hendricks picked up the win for the 'Hawks, tossing two innings in relief. Nick Ernst recorded the save, the first of his collegiate career (Recap). Friday's MAC opener saw Miami slide past Ball State, 4-2. Tied 2-2 after four, the Red & White struck for a single run in the seventh and eighth innings. Ernst and Ryan Marske combined to pitch the final five innings for the 'Hawks as they held the Cardinals scoreless over that period to seal the victory (Recap). After two nail-biters in the first two games of the week, Saturday's game was not close and it did not favor the RedHawks. Ball State's starting pitcher, Zach Plesac, went the distance en route to a 9-0 shutout over Miami (Recap). Sunday's series finale began in a similar fashion as the RedHawks fell down 6-0 early on. The Red & White battled back to make it a game at 6-5 before the Cardinals added insurance markers in the eighth and ninth innings to grab a 9-6 win (Recap). This Week: Miami kicks off this week's slate with a quick trip down to Morehead State. Then, the 'Hawks return home for a 6 p.m. matchup with Dayton on Wednesday. The team will then head to Northern Illinois for their first road MAC series of 2016.
