Tennis Drops Non-Conference Finale to No. 61 Old Dominion

MOBILE, Ala. -- After earning an opening doubles victory, Miami University's women's tennis team was unable to pick up its first victory in its last four outings, falling 4-3 to No. 61 Old Dominion in its non-conference finale Friday afternoon at the University of South Alabama's Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Monarchs (10-5) used three straight-sets victories in the singles competition to earn their third consecutive win, while the RedHawks (5-8) were able to secure two matches in the event.
In doubles, Miami was dominant with victories in the first two positions. Sophomores Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina topped Adriana Rajkovic and Ivana Vukovic, 6-2, while junior Andreea Badileanu and freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova shut out Nikol Hristova and Nataliya Vlasova, 6-0. The third-flight match featuring sophomore Hannah Shteyn and freshman Emily Struble was abandoned with the score tied at three.
The RedHawks won the initial point, but ODU stormed back in singles, picking up wins at first, second, fifth and sixth-flights. At No. 3 position, Badileanu earned her second-straight victory with a 6-4, 6-4 result against Vlasova. Ponomareva held off a comeback from Hristova in fourth-flight, prevailing in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 contest.
Miami now turns its attention toward the Mid-American Conference regular season and a chance for an eighth-consecutive regular-season title. The RedHawks will have a tough start as they travel to Ball State (13-2) on Friday, April 1 at 1 p.m. It will be a rematch of last season's MAC Women's Tennis Championship match, a 4-0 victory for Miami.
