OXFORD, Ohio - It was a nail-biter but the RedHawks (8-10) captured a big win Wednesday evening, downing the Wildcats of Northwestern by a score of 5-4. Spencer Dull's two-run double in the seventh gave Miami the lead for good as the team captured their first midweek victory of 2016.
The Red & White jumped out early and grabbed the game's first run. In the bottom of the first, after a one out double to right center by Tyler Harris, Ross Haffey singled through the left side. Harris scored on the play to give the 'Hawks a 1-0 edge after one.
Miami doubled their lead in the bottom of the second. With one out, Jake Romano reached base safely on a hit by pitch. Then, after Romano stole second, Adam Yacek singled to left, allowing Romano to come home and give the RedHawks a 2-0 advantage through the first two innings.
Northwestern cut the MU lead in half in the top of the third, plating one on a double to left. Later, in the away half of the fifth, the Wildcats evened things up at two apiece on a solo shot to center field. However, the stalemate was short-lived as a Julian Flanary's sac fly in the bottom half of the inning pushed Miami back in front, 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, Northwestern evened things back up, scoring once on a groundout. Again, the tie did not last long. In the bottom half of the inning, with two outs already recorded, Chad Sedio kept the inning alive with a double to left. Then, Flanary walked to put runners on first and second. After falling down into an 0-2 count, Dull belted a double to left center, scoring both Sedio and Flanary and giving the Red & White a 5-3 lead.
Northwestern put the pressure on the in the ninth, scoring once to make it 5-4. With the tying run on second, reliever Nick Ernst got a big strikeout to seal the deal.
Five RedHawks finished with a multi-hit outing, including Steve Sada (3-for-5), Harris (2-for-4), Haffey (2-for-4), Gary Russo (2-for-4) and Yacek (2-for-4).
Miami remains home as they begin MAC play with a three game series against Ball State that is set to begin Friday at 3 p.m.
