Women take third place overall with solid top-to-bottom times.
UPDATE: Results from the 9/15 meet at Cedarville can be found below. The women's squad grabbed fourth place overall while the men finished fifth.
THE BRONX, N.Y. – The Miami University men's and women's cross country teams completed their second race of the season Friday at the Iona Meet of Champions in the Bronx. The day was highlighted by a great performance from the women's squad, as they took third overall.
The veteran Miami squad look to be in mid-season form as several runners put on strong performances. Redshirt senior Alesha Vovk led the way for the second meet in a row with a 14th-place overall finish.
"Alesha ran the best cross country race I've ever seen from her, and I know there's even more in the tank," director of track and field/cross country Tom Chorny said regarding her performance.
Juniors Carly Davis and Maegan Murphy, freshman Lora Ontl and senior Emma Mashburn rounded out the RedHawks' scorers as Miami took third place, behind only Indiana and Columbia and ahead of the host Gaels.
Coach Chorny on the women's performance: "Our women ran extremely well today and showed that they will be a tough team to content with this year. The gap between out first and fifth runners was only 18 seconds, which will be a key factor come the Conference meet. The way they are running right now, I don't know who our top five will be by the end of the season and that's a great problem to have."
The men's team looked solid as well, coming in with a fifth place finish. Junior Christopher Torpy grabbed a top-10 finish to lead the 'Hawks and was followed by juniors David Coffey, Ryan Sharkey, Sean Torpy and sophomore Mitchell Towne in Miami's top five.
Coach Chorny on the men: "Fifth place overall isn't bad, but we know that with a more consistent race and a tighter pack, we can take down a couple of the teams that finished in front of us today. It's a good lesson to learn and if we make the correction going forward, we will be in a good spot.
