Hockey
Last Week: Miami hit its stride on the road by pulling off a road sweep of seventh-ranked Omaha over the weekend. On Friday, the RedHawks got a second-period goal from Kiefer Sherwood to nab a 1-0 lead after two periods of play, though that strike was answered by an Austin Ortega power play goal roughly three and a half minutes into the third. After playing two overtime games earlier this season, Friday's contest had the same feel to it until Matthew Caito buried a one-timer for a go-ahead power play goal with 2:03 left. The game was sealed in the final minute thanks to Kevin Morris' empty net goal with 27 seconds left (Recap). Saturday's finale saw Conor Lemirande post Miami's first multi-goal game of the year with his first-career hat trick. Lemirande, who scored one goal in his first 54 collegiate games, opened the scoring with 4:02 remaining in the first period while goals by Morris and Kuraly staked MU to a 3-0 lead 3:12 into the second period. After UNO got on the board at the 8:06 mark, Lemirande scored the first two of four-unanswered Miami goals to balloon the lead to 7-1 in an eventual 7-3 win. Kuraly (1g, 3a) pitched in four points while Zach LaValle (1g, 2a), Morris (1g, 1a) and Andrew Schmit (2a) all recorded multi-point games to move Miami into a fifth-place tie in the NCHC standings (Recap). This Week: Miami opens a four-game home stand when it plays host to third-place Denver for a weekend series. Friday's series opener is nationally televised on CBS Sports Network and has an earlier than usual start of 7 p.m.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (8-10 overall, 2-5 MAC) earned a split of its two home MAC games this week. After falling behind 23-2 to start the contest, the RedHawks rallied to within six points on several occasions, but eventually fell to Central Michigan, 72-58, on Wednesday evening in Oxford, Ohio. Sophomore guard Baleigh Reid led Miami with 15 points in what turned out to be her final game of the season as she suffered an injury in the fourth quarter. (Recap) Behind a balanced scoring effort and outstanding defense, the Miami picked up a 69-58 victory on Saturday afternoon over the Buffalo Bulls inside Millett Hall. Kayla Brown led the 'Hawks with 16 points. (Recap) This Week: No midweek game this week for the 'Hawks. Miami returns to action on Saturday with a rematch at Central Michigan that tips at 1 p.m. It will air live on ESPN3.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: Miami dropped a pair of games last week. The RedHawks dropped a 77-60 decision to Buffalo on Tuesday. (Recap) Senior guard Geovonie McKnight led all scorers with 18 points in a 75-46 loss at Akron on Saturday. (Recap) The RedHawks game at Toledo on Saturday, Feb. 13 has been selected for television and will be aired on BCSN, TWCS and ESPN3. (Release) This Week: Miami returns home to host a pair of games, entertaining Central Michigan on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. and Northern Illinois at 3;30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tuesday is Miami's Military Appreciation game. Miami coaches also will take part in the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer week with the annual Suits and Sneakers initiative at both games. (Release)
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: The RedHawk senior team won silver at the Mozart Cup in Salzburg, Austria. Representing the United States as Team USA among a 13-team field at the international event, Miami amassed a combined score of 164.49. (Day 1 Recap) (Day 2 Recap) This Week: Miami's junior and collegiate teams return to the Ice at the Midwestern Championships Jan. 28-30 in Portland, Oregon.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: Miami came up just short, but made an impressive regular season debut Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 at #51 Indiana. Freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova highlighted the match with her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Paula Gutierrez at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Nelli Ponomareva (6-1, 6-2) and freshman Emily Struble (6-3, 6-7, 6-4) extended their winning streaks to four with singles victories that helped Miami nearly earn its first ever victory the Hoosiers in 34 all-time meetings. Ponomareva also teamed with fellow sophomore Anastasiia Vasiukhina to defeat Madison Appel and Sarah McLean at No. 1 doubles. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks (0-1) will stay on the road as they take on Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. in Richmond, Ky.
Women's Swimming
Last Week: Miami University women's swimming and diving team came up just short against MAC rival Bowling Green Friday afternoon at Cooper Pool, 151-149. In the one-meter dive, Miami finished 1-2-3, with junior Pei Lin leading the pack (321.30). Fellow juniors Jenna Karrow (267.90) and Taylor LeCount (263.47) finished in second and third, respectively. Lin also won the three-meter dive with a score of 379.88, which was a Cooper Pool record. Junior Stephanie LeMire, junior Logan Klinsky and freshman Grace Van Fossen all won individual races. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks will compete at the Nixon Aquatic Center for the last time in the 2015-16 season for senior day against Akron on Friday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m.
Indoor Track
Last Week: The Indoor Track season continued for the the RedHawks at Gladstein Invitational at Indiana University. The RedHawks kicked off action Friday night with the high jump where Jess Baker finish fifth by clearing 5-6 to tie her personal best. In the pole vault, Hope Turner cleared her indoor-best height of 11-8 to finish seventh on attempts. The fast section of the mile run saw Laura Bess posted a 4:54.73 for seventh place in her individual season debut, giving her the top team time for the 2016 season. Alesha Vovk took fourth in the other heat with a time of 5:01.97, dropping almost 21 seconds from her personal best. Fellow RedHawk Alex Cameron finished 11th with a time of 5:16.53 (Recap). On Saturday, Caitlyn Redmon finished seventh in the long jump marking 18-5.25 improving her personal best mark by 8.25 inches. Arionna Darling threw a personal best 46-10.75 in the shot put to finish in seventh place. Katie Walter marked 43-6.5 for 13th place. Ashley Frahm rounded out the RedHawk effort marking 42-9.5. Megan Beaver led the way in the 600m, finishing fourth in 1:35.95. Alexis Szivan was 12th, posting a time of 1:37.88. McKenna Kiple rounded out the Miami complement finishing in 1:42 for a new personal best and 19th overall. Allison Klonne took fifth in the 800m, posting a time of 2:16.72 for a season-best time (Recap). This Week: The Red and White head to Nashville next weekend for the Vanderbilt Invitational Friday and Saturday.
