
Torpy Leads Miami on Second Day of MAC Championships

Chris Torpy's Steeplechase victory highlights the day.
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Miami University track and field team completed the second day of Mid-American Conference Championship action Friday at Ball State University. After Danielle Collier's javelin victory Thursday, junior Christopher Torpy became the next RedHawk to take home a gold medal as he earned a victory in the steeplechase to end Friday.
At the end of the second day, the Miami men set well within striking distance, tied for third with 48 points. The RedHawk women currently sit seventh heading into Saturday.
Torpy ran a 9:00.32 to claim the MAC crown in one of the day's lone track finals. He will have a chance to add even more hardware in tomorrow's 5K and 1500m finals. Right behind Torpy, Matthew Bromley used a big kick to also find the podium with a third place finish; Seth Conroy came in fifth, giving Miami's nationally-ranked steeplechase event squad three runners in the top five.
In the women's steeplechase finals, both Katie Vitou and Claire Linn brought home points for the RedHawks. Vitou ran a personal best 10:43.95 to take fifth place while Linn crossed the line in eighth.
While the steeplechase was the only track final of the day, there were several field and multi events Friday that crowned champions. Kenny Glenn earned a silver medal in the long jump, with his distance of 7.70m securing second place for the senior and eight standings points for the 'Hawks. Travis Moore came through in the shot put, earning fourth place with a throw of 16.62m. Ryan Smith also picked up points after finishing in seventh.
In the heptathlon that began Thursday and came to a conclusion Friday, Sarah Bruns just narrowly missed the podium with a fourth place finish for Miami. She was propelled by event wins in the 100m hurdles and 800. In the men's decathlon, Ben Artrip turned in a solid performance to finish sixth; seconds in the discus and pole vault were his highlights of the event.

Olivia Bechtel paced the entire field in the 400 to coast into tomorrow's final, while Emily Hooker will join her after a solid performance of her own. In the 800, both Rachel Kotchman and McKenna Fry securing their spots in the finals; both of them will also run in the 1500 finals tomorrow.
From the men's runners, the trio of Ivan Dye, Jake Owens, and Luke Finnegan all qualified for the 400m finals. Finnegan and Owens will also be running in the 200. In the 100m dash, Jeremiah Hunter came second in the prelims with a run of 10.66 and will be joined by Cedric Asseh. Lastly, the men's 800m saw Sean Torpy, Jonathan Fee, and Mitchell Towne all qualify, with Torpy leading the pack.
Championship Saturday tomorrow will feature a full slate of track finals as well as the remaining field finals. Field events kick off at 11 a.m., while running events get underway at 1 p.m. Live results and a video stream are available for the entirety of the meet.
