RedHawks post a number of event wins and PRs.
MUNCIE, Ind. - In a meet where the RedHawks experimented with some different start lists, the Miami University track and field team still posted a bevy of strong marks at the Ball State Challenge in Muncie, Ind.
Several of the RedHawks' usual suspects continued to lead the way, albeit in some different events. While she didn't run in arguably her strongest event in the 400m, junior Olivia Bechtel still put up some of the meet's biggest highlights. In her first 100m run of the 2019 outdoor year, Bechtel posted a personal-best 11.87 to take second. She followed that up with a 24.02 mark and a win in the 200m. In the 800m, Emily Hooker grabbed the win with a 2:13.92 that shattered her personal record while Kalliopi Kountouri also hit the podium in her first ever collegiate run in the event.
Elsewhere, Mallory Harr set a PR with a 1:03.05 that won her the 400m hurdles. The RedHawks got a great race from several runners in the 1500, with Claire Linn (3rd, 4:34.50), Rachel Kotchman (5th, 3:34.72), Emma Mashburn (7th, 4:35.15), and McKenna Fry (8th, 4:36.84) all posting PRs. The Miami team of Bechtel, Kountouri, Harr, and Gabby Maslowski took second in the 4x400 relay with a 3:48.87.
Among the men's runners, sprinters Jeremiah Hunter and Luke Finnegan both had strong days. Hunter took first with a 10.52 in a 100m race that saw Finnegan finish fourth, and they both set personal records in the 200m as Hunter (21.23) finished second and Finnegan (21.46) finished third. Both of them, along with Dawson Wervey and Jake Owens, competed on the 4x100m relay squad that posted a 41.71 to win the event.Â
The 'Hawks had several great performances in the meet's distance events as well. Sean Torpy ran a 1:51.28 to take the victory in the 800m, while Jonathan Fee came in hot on his heels in second. Alex Tam (14:50.75), Bradley Davis (14:55.67), and Charlie Harders (15:15.03) all finished in the top five of the 5000m, while Seth Conroy posted a huge PR of 3:54.25 to win the 1500m.
Over in the field, freshman Ryan Smith had a monster day in the meet's throwing events. He posted a total of three PRs across the hammer throw, discus, and shot put while earning top-six placements in all three of those events along with the javelin. In the long jump, Kenny Glenn won the event yet again with a jump of 7.37m. Glenn has won the long jump in all three of his starts in the event this season.
For the women's field athletes, Hannah Falcione highlighted the day with a 12.03 personal record to come out victorious in the triple jump. She also finished in the top five of the long jump.
Full results from the meet are posted above.
Next weekend will be a split-squad one for Miami, with some athletes competing at the University of Virginia and some staying at home for the RedHawk Invitational on Saturday.Â
