RedHawks Secure Five-Set Victory at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.— The Miami University volleyball team (14-13, 8-7 MAC) took down Central Michigan (9-18, 6-9 MAC) in a five-set match (31-33, 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12) on Friday night at McGuirk Arena. Chelsea Williams and Lauren Coyne led all players with 18 kills, while Molly Creech followed closely behind with 15 kills. Kamryn Utley (31) and Hayden Hicks (29) dished out the most assists for Miami. Defensively, four different RedHawks put down four blocks, while Creech (23) and Lindsay Kahren (18) led the team in digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Williams had two kills and Gentry Warrick added another to give Miami a 3-1 lead early in the opening set. Central Michigan surged ahead 10-6, but a Lindy Radaszewski and Creech block and two Coyne kills closed the gap to 11-9. The Chippewas tried to pull ahead 17-14, but Miami responded with kills and a Hicks service ace, regaining an 18-17 advantage. Central Michigan led 24-22 at the end of the set, but Miami tied it at 25. Numerous kills from Williams and Creech kept the RedHawks close, but the Chippewas edged out the set 33-31.
- Miami started strong in the second set with kills and service aces, leading 5-3. The RedHawks held the lead until Central Michigan tied the score at 9-9 and took a two-point advantage at 16-14. Williams added two more kills, and Utley served an ace to put Miami in control at 18-16. The RedHawks then outscored Central Michigan 7-5 to secure a 25-21 win in the second set.
- Two Coyne kills, a Williams solo block and a Williams kill put the score at 4-2 in favor of the RedHawks in the third set. The Chippewas evened things up at 10-10 and took their largest lead of the set at 15-13. A flurry of kills from Creech and Radaszewski helped Miami take control of the set, 19-16. Central Michigan looked to take the set after securing a 22-21 lead before Miami ended the set on a 4-1 run to claim a 25-23 third-set win.
- The RedHawks kept it close in the beginning of the fourth set when the Chippewas stretched their lead to 12-5. Two kills from Raegan Lantz helped Miami stay in the fight at 13-8. The RedHawks trailed by only two points after Williams smacked down back-to-back kills to make it 16-14 in favor of Central Michigan. The RedHawks made a strong push but dropped just short, as the Chippewas claimed the fourth set 25-21.
- Two kills from Gentry Warrick and an Utley service ace propelled the RedHawks to a 6-3 advantage in the fifth set. The Chippewas fought back to even the score at 6-6, but the RedHawks looked to separate at 8-6. With the score tied at 11-11, two kills from Coyne and a solo block from Lantz sealed a 15-12 fifth-set win for the RedHawks.
- The RedHawks have now won three consecutive matches.
- The Red and White recorded 74 kills in comparison to 65 kills from the Chippewas.
