OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (3-1) opened the Miami/Best Western Invitational with a four-set win against Evansville (0-5).

Lauren Coyne led all players with 12 kills, and Molly Creech followed closely with 10 of her own. Creech also set the pace with the most service aces (three) of the match, and Holland Van Deusen had the most assists (24) for Miami. Defensively, Rachel Morgan totaled the most digs (15), while Coyne (three) and Lindy Radaszewski (three) each led the RedHawks in blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Miami jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Purple Aces in the first set. Three consecutive kills that were fueled by Chelsea Williams and Sophia Stallworth pushed the RedHawks' advantage to 11-6. Evansville looked to close in on Miami's 11-8 lead before Holland Van Deusen recorded a pair of service aces to help the RedHawks go on a 5-0 run and push the score to 16-8. The Red and White did not look back, as Creech and Coyne ended the set by each putting down two kills to win 25-10.
The Red and White began the second set with a 3-0 advantage until Evansville knotted the score at 5-5. The Purple Aces eventually took a 14-7 lead and stretched the score to 19-9 as the end of the set approached. Three kills from Coyne sparked a RedHawk run and helped Miami close within striking distance at 22-18. Despite the strong effort, the Red and White dropped the second set 25-18.
Creech opened the third set with five kills and a service ace to propel the RedHawks to an 11-3 advantage. A solo block and three kills from Williams extended that lead to 16-3. The Red and White continued to control the set, as the Purple Aces recorded numerous errors to give Miami a 25-6 third-set win.
The Purple Aces came out strong in the fourth set, as they pushed ahead 3-0 at the start. The Red and White answered with five kills and two service aces to outscore Evansville 13-3 and take control of the set at 13-6. The Purple Aces did not back down, cutting into their deficit to trail by one point at 16-15. The RedHawks used three service aces to fuel a 9-3 run and earn a 25-18 fourth-set victory.

NOTES:

Miami had a .244 hitting percentage in comparison to .070 by Evansville.
The RedHawks served 11 aces and held the Purple Aces to just one.
The Red and White held a team under double-digits in a set for the second time this season (set three, 25-6).
