No. 6 WMU Edges Miami 5-3

OXFORD, Ohio — Miami's Ryan Savage scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period, but No. 6/5 Western Michigan answered back just over a minute later en route to a 5-3 victory over the RedHawks Saturday. Although Miami (3-12-1, 1-7-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first period, the Broncos (12-4-0, 5-3-0 NCHC) came back to take the lead twice in the third stanza before tacking on an empty-net goal for the final margin.

Ludvig Persson made 37 saves in the net for MU, while Hampus Rydqvist and Matthew Barbolini joined Savage on the scoresheet for the Red and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 0:37 1st (Miami 1-0) | The RedHawks struck early, courtesy of a Rydqvist blast from the right point. Red Savage cycled the puck around to Dylan Moulton, who retrieved it near the blue line and passed across to Rydqvist for the long-distance goal.
  • 6:10 1st (Miami 2-0) | Miami scored on its first power play attempt of the night, as Barbolini tipped in a deep shot from Derek Daschke after Michael Regush worked the puck free from the boards.
  • 16:23 1st (Western Michigan 2-1) | The Broncos answered back on a power play of their own late in the first period. Drew Worrad set up Ty Glover in close, and after Glover's first swing at the puck, Cole Gallant knocked it home.
  • 8:36 2nd (Western Michigan 2-2) | WMU tied the game midway through the second period on a goal by Tim Washe. Daniel Hilsendager's pass ahead set up a 2-on-2 with Jamie Rome and Washe, and Rome's diagonal pass split two Miami defenders for Washe to finish.
  • 5:25 3rd (Western Michigan 3-2) | Western struck on the power play for the second time to take a 3-2 lead. After Miami was unable to clear the puck out of the zone, WMU's Josh Passolt slid the puck to Paul Washe in the middle of the ice. His extra pass to Ronnie Attard on the far side gave Attard an angle to slip a shot past Persson.
  • 10:45 3rd (Miami 3-3) | Miami battled back to tie the game, as PJ Fletcher won the puck near center ice and knocked it in the direction of Ryan Savage. Savage skated ahead and beat Brandon Bussi from the right wing to pull the RedHawks even at 3-3.
  • 12:01 3rd (Western Michigan 4-3) | Once again, the visitors were able to turn defense into offense quickly, resulting in Luke Grainger's game-winning goal off a give-and-go with Max Sasson. Cedric Fiedler added an assist on the play for WMU.
  • 17:59 3rd (Western Michigan 5-3) | Miami attempted to capitalize on a sustained push into the attacking zone by pulling Persson for an extra skater, but a turnover near the blue line led to a breakaway empty-net goal for Glover.

  • Barbolini and Ryan Savage now share the team lead with six goals apiece this season.
