Track and Field Gets Weekend Started On The Right Foot

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Miami University track and field program began a three-meet weekend on Friday. The RedHawks took on competition at the Jesse Owens Classic, the Virginia Challenge and the Stanford Twilight.
At the Jesse Owens Classic, Andrew Vollet was runner up in the open section of the shot put marking a personal best 55-0.75 to kick off the weekend. Alesha Vovk was second in the 3000m steeplechase clocking in at 10:33.64. Giving her the third-fastest steeplechase time in the Mid-American Conference this season. The men's race featured a MAC showdown where a new top-three times were run. Zach McBride was fourth overall clocking in at 9:10.72 for the third-fastest time in the conference.
In the championship section of the women's 5000m, Brenna Poulsen finished seventh with a time of 17:04.16 for a 30 second personal best and an automatic qualification to the MAC Championships. Ben Metzger ran an outdoor personal best in the men's 5000m, crossing the line in 14:54.77 taking 11th. Jake Brumfield was second for the RedHawks in 15:08.40 for 18th while Ryan Pitner was 22nd finishing in 15:23.83.
Stephen Biebelhausen led the way in the 1500m for the Red and White, posting a time of 4:00.8 for 19th overall. In the women's race, Kelsey Kohls clocked in at 4:48.20 for 41st.
In the women's javelin, Aaryn Gray marked 129-8 to take fifth. Fellow RedHawk Tessa Brooks marked 105-8 for 17th.
Action in Columbus will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
At the Virginia Challenge, Arionna Darling marked 51-0.25 in the talent packed showcase section of the women's shot put finishing fifth. In the women's hammer, Martha Szekely marked 178-2 to finish sixth in the open section.
Closing out Friday at the Virginia Challenge was Maria Scavuzzo, who posted a time of 35:20.99 to finish 17th. This gives her the sixth fastest performance in the MAC.
Action will resume at the Virginia Challenge at 10 a.m., with Danielle Collier throwing in the javelin.
