Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks emerged victorious for the sixth time their past eight games when they traveled to in-state rival and 19th-ranked Bowling Green on Friday night. After trailing 1-0 despite a 16-8 shot advantage following the first period, the Red and White got second-period strikes from Anthony Louis and Sean Kuraly to nab a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Kiefer Sherwood added a late goal while Matthew Caito sealed the deal with an empty netter as Miami compiled a season-high 49 shots while holding Bowling Green to just 22 in an eventual 4-1 win. Kuraly (1g, 1a) and Grant Hutton (2a) each posted multi-point games as Miami improved to 12-13-3 on the season (Recap). This Week: Miami resumes NCHC play with a Friday-Saturday series at long-time rival Western Michigan.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: In a game that was defined by free-throw shooting, it was a free throw by sophomore forward Rod Mills with 5.4 seconds that lifted Miami to a 45-44 win at Western Michigan to earn its first road win of the season. (Recap) Toledo took command from the start and never looked back as the Rockets downed Miami, 93-49, on Saturday night. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks return home to host Ball State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The Kings Firecrackers Jump Rope Team will perform. Miami Athletics will honor all the student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 GPA or better for the fall semester with special recognition of all the 4.0 student-athletes. The game is also a Glow Out. The RedHawks then travel to face long-time rival Ohio at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Feb. 20.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (9-14 overall, 3-9 MAC) dropped a pair of contests this past week. The RedHawks could not overcome a hot-shooting first half from Northern Illinois as it fell, 92-73, Wednesday afternoon. Freshman forward Kendall McCoy returned to the starting lineup and led the team with a career-high 19 points. (Recap) Miami fell 70-46 Saturday afternoon to the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Millett Hall. The contest was Miami's annual Love Honor Care game to benefit the Luna Cares Foundation. McCoy had her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks have a pair of road games this week. On Wednesday, Miami travels to MAC-leading Ohio for a 7 p.m. tip. The 'Hawks then make the long trip to Buffalo Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: In their lone match of the week, the RedHawks picked up an important 4-3 victory over #55 Marshall Sunday morning in Hamilton. With the match tied at 3, sophomore Nelli Ponomareva overcame a first set loss and 2-0 third set deficit to take her No. 4 singles match, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, from Maddie Silver and clinch the victory. Miami earned the first point of the match with an impressive doubles performance that saw senior Ana Rajkovic and junior Andreea Badileanu pick up their fourth consecutive win, as well as sophomores Ponomareva and Vasiukhina hand Marshall's No. 1 pair just their second loss of the season. Rajkovic was also victorious in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 result at No. 6 singles, while freshman Emily Struble's 6-4, 6-3 No. 5 win and Ponomareva's comeback helped Miami finish off their biggest win of the season so far. Sunday's victory was the third victory over a ranked opponent in Yana S. Carollo's tenure and the first against the Thundering Herd since 2012 (Recap). This Week: Miami heads to Lincoln, Neb. for a pair of matches this weekend at the University of Nebraska. The RedHawks will take on the hosting Cornhuskers on Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m., before facing Memphis the following day at noon.
Golf
Last Week: Miami began its spring season with a third place finish at the Mid-American Match Play. On Monday, the RedHawks downed Ohio, 3.5-2.5, before falling to Eastern Michigan, 4-2. (Recap) On Tuesday, Miami defeated Toledo, 4-2, to win the third place match. (Recap) Patrick Flavin, Bud Radis, Brian Ohr and Greg Conrad each went 2-1 in their individual matches at the tournament. This Week: Miami's golf team is idle until the Colleton River Collegiate, March 7-8.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: The Miami junior synchronized skating team moved up in the final standings to finish seventh among an 11-team field at the Junior World Qualifier last weekend. (Friday Recap) (Saturday Recap) This Week: Miami's senior team travels to Milan, Italy for its second international competition at the Spring Cup International.
Women's Swimming
Last Week: The RedHawks competed in the Ohio State Invitational this weekend against Ball State, Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Purdue and Wright State. Freshman Allison Pierce won the 200-yard butterfly, the first collegiate win of her career (2:04.31). Senior Michele Rielly placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.83) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (56.35). Sophomore Gabi D'Abato placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:15.44. Freshman Sarah Wolanske swam a time of 17:26.45 in the event, good enough for third place. (Recap) This Week: Miami will be off for two weeks until it competes in the Mid-American Conference championships on Feb. 24-27.
Indoor Track and Field
Last Week:The Red and White took on the Music City Challenge in Nashville. The RedHawks saw a number of stellar performances resulting in eleven personal best times and marks. In the weight throw on Friday night Martha Szekely improved on her personal best in every throw she attempted culminating in a mark of 58-8 for second on the Miami all-time performance list. The distance group had great performances all weekend that saw the distance medley relay squad of Megan Beaver, Kathie Wollney, Alexis Szivan and Laura post the second fastest time in Miami history. In the Men's 5000m all three RedHawks set new personal bests. In the 3000m Brenna Poulsen posted a personal best of 9:48.89 to qualify for the MAC championships. Andrew Dusing, Cody Reisterer and Stephen Biebelhausen all posted personal bests in men's 3000m. In the Mile all five RedHawk women set new personal bests led by Laura Bess who clocked in at 4:47.52. In the sprints Wollney and Kountouri posted all-time best 400m times to crack the Miami top-10 all-time list at 7th and 9th respectively. In the 60m Alexus Jimson-Miller laid down her fastest race of the season clocking in at 8.51 giving her the second fastest time in the MAC. (Friday Recap) (Saturday Recap) This Week: The RedHawks will head to Columbus on Friday for the Buckeye Tune-Up at French Field House.
Men's Swimming and Diving
Last Week: Miami University's men's swimming and diving team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a pair of away meets. A portion of the team travelled to Muncie, Ind. to face the Ball State Cardinals in their last dual meet of the season. Nine victories in individual events set the RedHawks up to defeat the Cardinals, 171-127, ending the season with an overall record of 2-5. The diving squad had an impressive showing after they swept the one-meter and three-meter competitions with senior Michael Nash leading the pack both times followed by senior Cole Fryman and freshman Ryan Nash in third place. Newcomer Nick Potter solidified a win in the 1000-yard freestyle by finishing a full ten seconds before the rest of the competition with his time of 9:53.46. Senior Christopher Dieter took first in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 4:47.97. Miami was also represented at the two-day Ohio State Invitational. Junior Maximilian Jelen claimed third in the 200-yard backstroke with his time of 1:50.72. Freshman Chase Bettner had an impressive showing in the 100-yard butterfly with his sixth-place finish (50.62) followed by freshman Jonathan Brooks in eighth. (Friday Recap) (Saturday Recap) Looking Ahead: The RedHawk men reunite back in Oxford where they will begin preparations for the Mid-American Conference Championships which will take place Mar. 2-5, in Ypsilanti, Mich.
