Miami Gets Strong Start at Music City Challenge

Nashville - The Miami track and field program opened competition at the Music City Challenge on Friday, facing stiff competition from Austin Peay, Belmont , Clayton State, Furman , Georgia , Georgia Tech , Jacksonville , Lipscomb, Memphis, MTSU, Milligan, Miss State, Murray State, SMU, TAMU-Kingsville, Tennessee Tech, Texas Tech, UCF, Western Kentucky and host Vanderbilt.
Martha Szekely had a standout day in the weight throw, setting a new personal best of 58-8 to finish fifth overall. Szekely's mark moves her to second on the Miami all-time performance list and eighth in the Mid-American Conference to qualify her for the MAC Championships in two weeks. Ashley Frahm marked 53-4.25 to take 11th overall. Katie Walter threw a mark of 50-9.5 to finish the day in 14th.
Peter Stefanski was the first RedHawk to action for the weekend, he finished fifth in the high jump clearing 6-7.5 to take fifth overall. This week's performance keeps him tied for sixth in the MAC.
At 200m, Arissa Freeman was the top RedHawk, finishing in 25.67 for 25th overall. Briah Owens was 33rd, clocking in at 25.88. Alexus Jimson-Miller was 34th in 25.96 and Kalliopi Kountouri rounded out Miami's competitors, taking 37th in 26.12. In the men's race, Jake Owens led the way in 15th with a time of 22.56. Adam Bodrick was 17th in 22.70 and Avery Taylor placed 26th in 23.12. Freeman's time gives her the top 200m performance for the Red and White on the season.
In the men's pole vault, Matt Owens cleared 15-0.25 to tie for ninth place, his mark pushes him in to 11th place in the MAC standings.
In the women's distance medley relay, the RedHawks took second and fourth. The A squad of Megan Beaver, Kathie Wollney, Alexis Szivan and Laura Bess laid down a time of 11:37.85. Alesha Vovk, Kalliopi Kountouri, Alex Cameron and Kelsey Kohls combined for a time of 11:58.59 on the B. The A team's time of 11:37.85 gives the RedHawks the second fastest DMR in the MAC and improved on their performance at the Kentucky Invitational by 20 seconds.
In the men's 5000m, Ben Metzger took fourth in 14:50.43 to lead the RedHawks. Jake Brumfield was eighth in 15:00 and Matt Bromley was 10th in 15:01.97. All three RedHawk runners earned new personal bests. Metzger's performance gives him the 12th fastest 5k in the MAC.
The RedHawks will kick off action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with the women's shot put.
