Williams Named to NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Thirteen members of the Miami University hockey team earned recognition for their efforts in the classroom by landing on the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Academic All-Conference Team on Tuesday.
In addition to being one of the RedHawks’ 13 NCHC Academic All-Conference Team members, junior goaltender Jay Williams is Miami’s representative on the eight-member NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team. A finance major with a 3.6 GPA, Williams is fifth in the country with a league-best 1.91 goals against average and is a four-time NCHC Goaltender of the Week, a Hobey Baker candidate and a Mike Richter Award candidate. As a member of the NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team, Williams is in the running for the NCHC Scholar Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced at the NCHC Awards Celebration on March 19 in Minneapolis, the day before the Frozen Faceoff begins.
Williams joins junior forward Riley Barber (Pittsburgh, Pa./USNTDP (USHL)), senior forward Blake Coleman (Plano, Texas/Indiana (USHL)), junior forward Alex Gacek (Dracut, Mass./Youngstown (USHL)), sophomore forward Justin Greenberg, (Dallas, Texas/Texas (NAHL)), junior forward Sean Kuraly (Dublin, Ohio/Indiana (USHL)), sophomore forward Devin Loe (Weston, Fla./Fairbanks (NAHL)), junior forward Michael Mooney (Eden Prairie, Minn./Alexandria (NAHL)), junior forward Kevin Morris (Massena, N.Y./Dubuque (USHL)), junior forward Cody Murphy (Highwood, Ill./Tri-City (USHL)), senior defenseman Ben Paulides (San Jose, Calif./Youngstown (USHL)), junior defenseman Taylor Richart (Blaine, Minn./Fargo (USHL)) and junior forward Andrew Schmit (Grafton, Wis./Lincoln (USHL)) on the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team. Members of the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team need to complete at least one full year at their school and must hold at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average.
The NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team consists of one student-athlete from each of the eight NCHC institutions. Each school selected their recipient based on criteria that included having at least a 3.50 grade-point average and having competed in at least 50 percent of their teams’ games this season. Scholar-Athlete Team representatives also demonstrated athletic achievement on the ice and have given back to the community and/or the campus though service opportunities. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed a full year at their school.
