Senior Trent Vogelhuber and freshman Austin Czarnik scored 14 seconds apart in the third period, the fastest the RedHawks have scored two goals since Feb. 11, 2012 against Alabama-Huntsville, also 14 seconds apart and the fastest the RedHawks have scored two goals all season.
The last time Miami rallied from a three-goal deficit was against Northern Michigan on January 28, 2002.
Senior goaltender Connor Knapp finishes his Miami career with a 1.94 goals against average to set the school record, previously held by Jeff Zatkoff with a 1.96 GAA in 2005-08. He also had a .918 save percentage, good for second all-time at Miami behind Zatkoff's .927. This season Knapp finished with a 1.69 GAA, which breaks the Miami single-season record previosuly held by Zatkoff with a 1.72 in 2007-08. Knapp's .933 save percentage in his senior season ties Zatkoff's school record from '07-08.
Senior Chris Wideman played in his 163rd career game, which is 3rd all-time at Miami behind Jarod Palmer with 169 in 2006-10 and Pat Cannone in 2007-11.
Senior forward Alden Hirschfeld scored his first game-tying goal this season and second-career NCAA tournament goal in the third period.
Miami is now 2-3 in NCAA Tournament overtime games with wins over Michigan in 2010 and Air Force in 2008, and losses to Boston College in 2008, Boston University in 2009 and Massachusetts-Lowell in 2012.
Miami falls to 1-4-2 in overtime games this season. The RedHawks are now 7-10 in NCAA Tournament competition.
Miami's senior class of Alden Hirschfeld, Connor Knapp, Cody Reichard, Ben Saksa, Cameron Schilling, Patrick Tiesling, Matt Tomassoni, Trent Vogelhuber, Will Weber and Chris Wideman compiled 99 wins in its four years at the school, which ranks fourth in program history.
This is the fourth time this season Miami has scored at least three goals in the third period, and seventh time this season the RedHawks have scored at least three goals in a single period.
Freshman Austin Czarnik scored in the third period, his 10th of the season. Miami freshmen scored 49 of 122 goals on the season, good for 40.2 percent. At least one freshmen scored a goal in 27 of 41 games this year. RedHawk rookies accounted for 122 out 323 team points, which is 37.8 percent.
Czarnik extended his career-long point streak to seven games with his goal to pull Miami within one. He has 12 points in that span.
Junior forward Reilly Smith's career-long 10-game point streak came to an end.
Head Coach Enrico Blasi is now 7-8 in charge of Miami in the NCAA Tournament.
Miami's season ends in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh-straight year and 10th time in program history. The seven-straight NCAA Tournament berths is the third-longest active streak in the country, trailing only Michigan's 22 and North Dakota's 10-game streaks. The RedHawks have also won 20 or more games in each of the last seven seasons.
