OXFORD, Ohio - The day after recording her 4,000th career assist, senior setter Andrea Atteberry had another historic day with her first triple-double in a 3-1 win over Akron. Atteberry recorded a career-high 10 kills to go along with 35 assists and 13 digs to reach that mark.
With the win, the RedHawks even their overall record at 7-7 and improve to 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Akron falls to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
A kill and an ace from Jenn Caylor helped lead Miami to a 10-2 advantage to begin set one. After a service error on the next point, the RedHawks did not let off the gas as they went on an 11-3 run to push the advantage to 21-5. Caylor, Atteberry and Maria Leahy each had two kills during that stretch. That lead proved to be more than enough as an Akron attack error gave Miami a 25-8 win.
Two blocks and several attack errors by the Zips to begin the second set helped Miami jump to a 13-7 lead. From there the teams traded points until the RedHawks found themselves ahead 19-13. A 5-2 run by Akron closed the gap to three at 18-21, but that was as close as they could get as Miami won set two, 25-22.
Miami fell behind 2-6 in set three, but closed the gap to within one on a 7-4 run that featured two kills apiece from Leahy and Metzler, as well as a service ace from Leahy. The teams traded points as Atteberry kept the RedHawks in the set with her attacks from the setting position. With the score tied at 17, the Zips went on a 6-2 run to take a 23-19 advantage. Atteberry recorded back-to-back kills to pull Miami within two at 21-23, but it wasn't enough as Akron eventually took the third set 25-22.
Amy Raseman scored three consecutive kills to lead Miami to an early 4-2 advantage in set four. With the RedHawks up 14-10, another kill from Raseman, as well as a service ace by Caylor sparked a 4-1 run that gave Miami a seven point cushion. That seemed to be the spark the RedHawks needed as after Akron scored the next two points, a 7-2 run by Miami closed out the match with a 25-15 win. On the RedHawks 24th point, Atteberry stuffed a block attempt down to record her 10th kill of the match and first career triple-double.
Leahy had her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 16 digs. Metzler recorded 10 kills, while Lisa Treadway led the RedHawks with 16 digs. Miami hit .315 as a team, while holding Akron to a .046 hitting percentage.
Miami hits the road next week for more MAC action. The Redhawks travel to Bowling Green Thursday, Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. match and follow it with an 8 p.m. (EDT) match at Northern Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 3.
