RedHawks Fall in Five-Set Battle at Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Miami University volleyball team (1-1) fell in five sets to Sam Houston (2-0) on Friday night in the Bearkat Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A kill and a service ace from Molly Creech kept things tight at 5-5 to begin the first set. Two more kills from Creech and a pair of Service aces from Lindy Radaszewski and Kamryn Utley kept the score knotted at 12 apiece. Numerous attack and service errors from the Bearkats kept Miami within reach of Sam Houston at 19-18. The RedHawks looked to close out the set with a 24-23 lead before Sam Houston responded to take the set 29-27. No team led by more than two points the entire set.
- Miami stormed out to a 5-2 advantage in the beginning of the second set. A burst of kills from Chelsea Williams helped the Red and White fend off the Bearkats at 11-7. Radaszewski added two kills of her own, and Kreutz recorded a service ace to stay on top 15-11. The RedHawks didn't look back, taking their largest lead of the set at 19-12 before closing out the set 25-19.
- Early kills from Lauren Coyne, Radaszewski and Creech evened the score at 4-4 in the third set. The Bearkats went on to jump ahead 12-5 lead. Miami came within five points at 15-10 and continued to fight until ultimately dropping 25-16.
- Two kills from Coyne and a combination of service aces from Piper Willinger and Creech put Miami over Sam Houston at 9-4 in the fourth set. A pair of late kills from Creech helped Miami hold off the Bearkats at 20-14. Sam Houston looked to make a push with the end of the set approaching before a kill from Coyne and Creech secured Miami a 25-18 win.
- Two kills from Grace Kreutz sparked the RedHawk offense to a 3-1 advantage in the fifth set. A service ace from Creech and back-to-back kills from Williams increased Miami's lead to 8-5. Another kill from Williams and a service ace from Holland Van Deusen gave the RedHawks their largest lead of the fifth set at 10-6. The Bearkats went on to find their rhythm and answered with a late run to take the final set 15-11.
NOTES:
- Creech led the RedHawks with 17 kills and three service aces (tied for the most of her career).
- Van Deusen tallied the most assists for the Red and White (21).
- Rachel Morgan totaled the most digs of the match (26).
