SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - School history was made on Saturday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. when the Miami (3-4-1, 3-1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) hockey team defeated Lake Superior State, 2-1, thus recording its first-ever sweep at LSSU's Taffy Abel Arena. Previously winless, freshman goalie Steve Hartley (Hawkesbury, Ontario) earned his first collegiate win by stopping 26 shots in the game.
Freshman Matt Christie (Ajax, Ontario) opened the scoring at 1:14 in the first period when he snuck a shot past LSSU goalie Matt Violin. After breaking out of the defensive zone, sophomore Chris Michael (Glenview, Ill.) flipped the puck ahead to Christie, who deked the goalie to his backhand side to set up his fifth goal.
Ranked second in the nation after last night's 4-for-5 outing, the power-play unit scored again on its first attempt of the night at 13:15 to give Miami a two-goal lead, 2-0. Senior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) was the scorer of the goal, moving himself into a tie for fifth all-time at Miami with 24 career power-play markers. The goal also gave Hogeboom two points for the night, having been the recipient of the second assist on Christie's goal. Credited with the assists on his goal, however, were the defensive pair of senior Ben Tharp (Hastings, Minn.) and sophomore Matt Davis (Rocky River, Ohio).
It took until 13:45 in the second frame for the Lakers to chip away at the Miami lead, 2-1, when Dominic Osman found the back of the net on the power play. The Lakers worked it around to Osman on the right wing for the one-timer, which beat Hartley shortside after he had been shifting with the play.
LSSU head coach Frank Anzalone pulled his goalie with 58 seconds remaining in the game, but the Miami defense successfully fended off the Lakers' extra attacker. In addition to collecting his first win, Hartley also was named the Perani Cup First Star of the Game. Hogeboom, who scored his goal by banking it in off Violin, was named the second star of the game.
Miami finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play, as the Lakers fall to 1-2-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference action.
Miami continues conference play next weekend when it travels up the road to Bowling Green for a two-game tilt on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. both nights in BGSU's Ice Arena.
