Miami Falls to Kent State After Five-Run Comeback

KENT, Ohio – The RedHawks lost a 5-4 contest to Kent State Friday after the Golden Flashes hit a walk-off single and erased an initial 4-0 Miami advantage. Evan Appelwick, Diego Cruz and Carson Raether each had multiple hits during the game. Miami falls to 15-9 (5-5 MAC) with the loss, while Kent State moves to 19-5 (9-1 MAC) with the win.

Game two versus Kent State will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m. The series will conclude Sunday before the RedHawks travel to Lexington, Kentucky for a standalone game against the Kentucky Wildcats.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The RedHawks pulled ahead early with a sac fly by Tommy Harrison in the first. Harrison's flyout scored Ryan Novak, who had doubled and reached third on a single by Appelwick. Harrison robbed a home run in the bottom of the inning to help the RedHawks hold Kent State scoreless to start.
- Miami extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second as Cruz doubled and scored on a single by Marcus Dierks. Kent State came up with back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the second, but Zac Sohosky threw a swinging strikeout to end the inning and hold them runless.
- The RedHawks scored their third two-out run of the game in the third inning. Ignacio Gonzalez singled to right after an HBP and a walk to drive in the run, widening the lead to three runs. Sohosky and the defense held the Flashes to three hits and no runs during innings three, four and five to protect their lead.
- The RedHawks continued their steady climb with a run in the sixth to make it 4-0. Dominic Krupinski came aboard via a walk and stole second, setting up Cruz for an RBI double, his second double of the day.
- Miami surrendered their first run of the game in the sixth as Kent State scored after a triple and a single. Two more runs scored on an error, shrinking Miami's lead to one.
- Kent State tied the game in the seventh with two outs, scoring on a full-count single.
- Austin Berggren had two strikeouts and a groundout in the eighth to keep the game tied.
- Raether led off the ninth for Miami with a double, but the RedHawks were unable to reclaim the lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Flashes put runners at the corners and singled to left field to take the crown with a final score of 5-4.

- Appelwick went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
- Raether went 2-for-5.
- Cruz went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run and an RBI.
